James Campbell High School       Goals and Expectations

GOALS:               To learn music reading and playing skills and strive to perform music to the best of our abilities.

EXPECTATION: Good learning and musical performance is most effectively achieved in an environment free of distractions or interruptions. To help achieve this, students are not allowed to talk once the period begins and bandroom rules established to maintain order and student safety must be followed. Students are expected to attend all classes, attend all rehearsals for the performance groups that they are members of, and participate in class by performing on their assigned instruments. ALL students are required to perform in at least ONE performance group per quarter.

CONTENT:

1.      Performing at football games, marching band events, band concerts, parades, and pep rallies.

2.      Music reading development.

3.      Tone, phrasing, and technique development on the student’s chosen instrument.

4.      Development of listening skills.

RULES:

1.      Students are expected to be in class before the bell rings and to be in their seats with their instruments, music, and a pencil (with an eraser) ready to play 5 minutes after the bell.

2.      Students will obey all rules described by the band director throughout the year pertaining to the use of the bandroom, performances, rehearsals, use of the rest rooms, use of the instruments, etc.

CONSEQUENCES:

a)      Students cutting class will be verbally warned, then the parents will be notified, and then the matter will be referred to the counselors or the vice principal if the cuts persist.

b)      Unexcused absences from class or rehearsals may cause the student to be cut from the performance group.

c)      Frequent disobeying of the band rules will mean the imposing of any of the following consequences:

1)      Sitting in front of the class and not being allowed to do anything for the period.

2)      Having to sort band music, uniforms, or handouts.

3)      Having to clean band trophies, counters, chairs, or instruments.

4)      Not being allowed to perform at a scheduled band event.

5)      Vice Principal referral.

GRADING:          Grading is based on a student’s participation in class and at band performances. Students are also graded on their effort to improve their music reading and instrument playing ability. No curve or standard score is used but students must perform in at least ONE performance group per quarter.

                                    Performance groups are as follows:

1.      Marching Band                 5.   Jazz Band

2.      Football Band                   6.   Jazz Combo

3.      Concert Band                    7.   Rock Group

4.      Parade Band                     8.   Small Ensembles

Students are told their grades and are allowed to discuss changes with the teacher. Major grade reductions or failures will result from excessive absences (over 5 unexcused), failure to meet the performance requirement, or non-participation in class.

HOMEWORK:       Students are assigned an instrument at the beginning of the school year for their own personal use. They are allowed to take these instruments home to practice along with any issued music. The bandroom is open for individual practice during recesses, lunch, and after school. Students are informed of recess, lunchtime, and after school rehearsals for marching band, concert band, parades, and sectionals.
